When I met 15-year old Holger during a high school exchange, I laughed at how much he loved American Soda and gave him a penguin T-Shirt to remember me by. Now years have passed, but I never would have thought this silly German would eventually change the way I live my life.
When I first moved to Germany, Holger introduced me to nearly everyone I know. He made me feel like Germany was my home, und hat mir sogar Schwäbisch beigebracht (was nur wegen ihm mir ab und zu angenehmer als Englisch ist). And, even though I was terrified of heights, Holger convinced me to go Gliding at Hahnweide and cliff diving at Alpsee.
I'm so thankful to have had him as a friend when I needed one, and only now do I fully realize that he taught me to overcome my fears. Above and beyond being a genuinely good person, Holger was an inspiration for all of us live life more fully.
The world will never see another Holger, and I already miss him terribly.
